Guidance Profile

PHILOSOPHY
The Gilbert School was founded by William L. Gilbert for the purpose of providing instruction “for the improvement of mankind by affording such assistance and means of educating the young as will help them to become good citizens.”

COMMUNITY
Winsted, a small city within the Town of Winchester is a rural community twenty-five miles northwest of Hartford. Winsted and Winchester, primary and secondary population areas, respectively, have a combined population of 11,000.

SCHOOL
The Gilbert School is a unique and wonderful, private 7-12 comprehensive middle/high school.  Our school has a rich history, dedicated faculty and staff, a supportive community and an International Residency Program which began in August 2013.

PROGRAM OF STUDIES
Course selection is one of the most important aspects of post-secondary school planning.  Students and parents are encouraged to participate in the process. Gilbert has comprehensive course offerings including academic, college, Honors, and Advanced Placement. A complete list of courses and requirements are in our Program of Studies.

CREDITS
Successful completion of twenty-two (22) for the Class of 2017, twenty-three (23) for the Class of 2018, twenty-four (24 for the Class of  2019, and twenty-five (25) for the Class of 2020, Carnegie Credits is required. A complete list of requirements is in our Program of Studies. *The total number of credit requirements is subject to change per adoption of The Gilbert School Corporation and the CT State Department of Education graduation guidelines.

CLASS PERIODS
Class periods average forty-five minutes, seven periods per day, five days per week, and thirty-six weeks per school year.

RANK IN CLASS
Class rank is determined by using a 4 point weighted grading system. Grades are weighted for class rank purposes only and are recorded on the student's transcript. In order for a student to be ranked the student must complete a minimum of four semesters.

EXTRA CURRICULAR PROGRAMS

ATHLETIC PROGRAMS

Girls: Basketball, Cross Country, Golf, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Tennis, Track, and Volleyball.
Boys: Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Soccer, Swimming, Tennis, Track, and Wrestling.
